Rusty's Bio Continued

When he isn’t assigned to one of our buildings, Rusty accompanies the superintendent and remains on call to respond whenever a student or staff member could benefit from his calming presence. Whether a student is experiencing anxiety, navigating a difficult day, or simply needs a quiet moment with a trusted companion, Rusty is ready to help.

To make Rusty’s services available throughout the district, he even has his own Google Calendar. Teachers can check his availability and schedule classroom visits, allowing students to benefit from his unique ability to create a calm, welcoming, and supportive learning environment.

Research continues to demonstrate the positive impact therapy dogs have in schools. Therapy dogs help reduce stress and anxiety, improve emotional regulation, encourage positive social interactions, increase student engagement, and create an atmosphere where students feel safe, connected, and ready to learn. Rusty has become an integral part of our district’s commitment to supporting the whole child—not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well.

While Rusty takes his responsibilities seriously, everyone knows his favorite part of the day comes when the work is done. Nothing makes him happier than being let off his leash on the elementary playground, where he can run with students as they’re laughing, smiling, and calling his name. Those moments of pure joy perfectly capture why Rusty is such a valued member of the Coldwater family.

Rusty reminds us every day that sometimes the best support doesn’t come from words—it comes from a wagging tail, a gentle nudge, and an unconditional friend who is always there when someone needs him most.
